We started our day with an incredible study of the history of Jazz by our instructor Peter Retzlaff.

For every great drummer there’s always a few influences that helped create the drummers that inspire me and in order for me to understand that  person/player, I have to research and understand who he/she were influenced by and so on.

We started with a chart outlining the Jazz pacesetters from Baby Dodds and Zutty Singleton in the 1920’s, both out of New Orleans from an area call the “District” or “Storyville” and onward to the music migration into Chicago, Kansas City than New York in the 1920’s and thru the 30’s.

Mr Retzlaff went on to say that Jazz has spread all over the world in many forms and has branched off into a dizzying array of genres from Blues, Country, Gospel, Rock and Roll, Latin Jazz, Fusion, Progressive Rock, R&B, Funk and the list goes on and on.

Of course we could spend a zillion years just on the history and all the circumstances surrounding each musical form, which lead to their start but we’ll save that for another discussion.

Mr Retzlaff had each of us play some Jazz and he gave us pointers and some incredible hand outs that he went over to clarify and demystify all things Jazz.

I can’t wait to share them with you all.
